You’re halfway through chatting with Claude when it suddenly disconnects, and after refreshing the page you find all the earlier conversation is gone—you’ve definitely run into this. Especially when writing long documents or discussing complex projects, losing context is maddening.
Why does Claude lose chat history
Claude’s conversation storage mechanism is a bit different from ChatGPT’s. Network fluctuations, leaving the page idle for a long time, or clearing the browser cache can all cause the conversation to be interrupted. In addition, the free version has limits on how long history is retained.
Four practical solutions
Method 1: Enable automatic browser saving
During a conversation, get into the habit of manually copying key content every few minutes. Chrome users can install the “Session Buddy” extension to automatically save tab states.
Method 2: Use Claude’s Projects feature
Pro users can save important conversations into Projects. Path: click “Projects” in the left sidebar → create a new project → add the current conversation. That way, even if the page refreshes, the content won’t be lost.
