If you want to fully back up your chat history, settings, and other data before leaving, then safely delete your ChatGPT account, you can follow the step-by-step instructions below. This article only covers ChatGPT’s official built-in “Export data” and “Delete account” paths, and also explains the most common issues such as not receiving the email or expired links.
Before exporting, confirm: your login email and an available device
ChatGPT’s data export sends a download link via email, so first make sure the email address you’re currently logged in with can still receive messages normally. It’s recommended to do this in a desktop browser for ChatGPT, as the page is more complete and the settings are easier to find.
If you usually sign in with Google/Apple one-tap login, also make sure the email associated with that account is usable; the export email will still be sent to the email bound to your account. Before the export is completed, don’t rush to log out of ChatGPT or change your email information, to avoid interrupting the process.
Export data on the ChatGPT web version: initiate the request from Settings
Open the ChatGPT web version, go to “Settings,” and under “Data controls” find “Export data.” After clicking, confirm as prompted; ChatGPT will display “Email sent” or “Processing.”
Wait a moment, then check your inbox for an export email from OpenAI/ChatGPT, which usually contains a download entry. After downloading, you’ll get a compressed file for viewing your ChatGPT data backup; it’s recommended that you also save the compressed file to cloud storage or an external drive.
