If you want to turn your ChatGPT chat history into an offline backup, or keep a copy before switching accounts, you can use the official data export feature. This article explains, following the ChatGPT interface path, how to export, how to view the export afterward, and what “migrating” ChatGPT chat history can and cannot do in practice.
Find the data export entry point in ChatGPT
First log in to ChatGPT, open the personal menu in the lower-left corner (avatar/name area), and open “Settings.” In Settings, find the options related to “Data controls,” where you will usually see “Export data.” If you switch back and forth between the web and desktop versions, it’s recommended to use the web version first, as the path is more consistent.
If you don’t see the export entry, first confirm that the current account is not in a restricted state, and check whether you’re logged into another ChatGPT account (common when mixing multiple browser accounts or using incognito windows). After switching accounts on the same device, refresh the page and then go back into Settings; you can usually see the correct “Export data.”
Complete steps to export ChatGPT data (including email download)
After submitting an export request under “Export data,” ChatGPT will indicate that it will send an export link to your registered email. Next, go to your inbox and find the email from OpenAI/ChatGPT, click the download link to obtain the compressed file, and save it locally. The download link typically expires, so it’s best to complete the download as soon as you receive the email.
After unzipping, you’ll see content that can be viewed offline (usually including web files or data files of your conversation history). For long-term backups, you can also copy the compressed file to cloud storage or an external drive, and name the folder using “account-date” to make it easier to find later.
