ChatGPT Voice Chat FAQ: Microphone Permissions, No Sound, and Lag

ChatGPT

This article compiles the most common issues in ChatGPT voice conversations: permission not granted, no response when you speak, no audio output, and conversation lag. Troubleshoot using the steps below—most cases can be resolved within a few minutes. This content only covers voice usage scenarios within ChatGPT itself.

Microphone permission is enabled, but ChatGPT still says it’s unavailable

First, confirm permissions at the browser or app level: in the “Site settings/permissions” on the left side of the browser address bar, set Microphone to “Allow,” then refresh the ChatGPT page and try again. On mobile, go to system settings, find ChatGPT, enable microphone permission, then fully quit the app and reopen it.

If you’re using Bluetooth headphones or an external microphone, ChatGPT may have selected the wrong input source. In the system “Sound/Input” settings, switch the default input device back to the microphone you’re actually using, then re-enter the ChatGPT voice interface.

You can record, but the other side “can’t hear you,” or it’s recognized as gibberish

The most common cause is that the input gain is too low or system noise reduction is “eating” your voice. First, raise the microphone input volume to medium-high, and close any third-party meeting/call apps that may be occupying the mic (for example, leaving a calling app open at the same time). Start a new voice conversation in ChatGPT to avoid carrying over an abnormal session state.

Language must match as well: if you’re speaking Chinese but recognition keeps drifting, explicitly say in the ChatGPT chat, “From now on, use Chinese,” and then start voice. Try to speak continuously, don’t stay too far from the microphone, and when the environment is noisy, prioritize using a wired headset microphone.

ChatGPT can hear you, but you can’t hear any sound

First rule out the most basic output issues: system volume, web/app volume, the mute switch, and whether the output device has been switched to a monitor or Bluetooth. Many “no sound” cases are simply because output was switched to another device—switch it back to your current speakers or headphones.

In the browser, also check whether the tab is muted and whether the site’s sound permission is being blocked. After confirming everything, close the ChatGPT voice interface and re-enter it; audio playback usually returns.

Voice chat stutters, disconnects, or keeps spinning

Voice is more demanding on network stability than text. If ChatGPT keeps spinning, try switching networks first (toggle between Wi‑Fi and cellular) and restart the router. If you’re on a corporate or public network, there may be restrictions that aren’t friendly to real-time audio connections; switching to a more stable network is often the most direct fix.

In addition, browser extensions can interfere with audio or connectivity (ad blockers and privacy plugins are common culprits). Try opening ChatGPT in an incognito window to test; if it works normally, disable extensions one by one to identify the source.

Quick self-checklist: pinpoint the issue in one minute

If you don’t want to try everything one by one, this order saves the most time: confirm system input/output devices → check ChatGPT site microphone permission → exit and re-enter the voice interface → switch networks → test in an incognito window. Most ChatGPT voice issues are resolved by this point.

If it still doesn’t work, note your device, browser/system version, and whether you’re using Bluetooth headphones, and include that when reporting inside ChatGPT or contacting support—it will make troubleshooting much faster.
