ChatGPT Web White Screen and CAPTCHA Loop Troubleshooting: Cache, Network, and Account Restrictions

If you open ChatGPT and it keeps showing a white screen, endlessly loading, or repeatedly asks for CAPTCHAs, it’s usually not as simple as “the system is broken.” Below, in troubleshooting order, I break down the most common causes to help you pinpoint the issue with the fewest steps and restore normal access.

First, determine whether it’s an issue on ChatGPT’s service side.

If ChatGPT gets stuck on the same page across different devices and different networks, don’t rush to reinstall your browser. It’s recommended to first check OpenAI’s official status page (status.openai.com) to confirm whether there are any login-, session-, or API-related outages.

When there’s a service-side issue, no matter how much you clear your local cache, it won’t be stable; in this kind of situation you usually can only wait for recovery, then log back into ChatGPT and complete verification once.

Browser-caused white screen: cache, cookies, and extension conflicts

The most common cause of a white screen on the ChatGPT web version is corrupted site cache or cookies. First, try opening ChatGPT in an incognito/private window; if it works normally in incognito mode, it’s basically caused by cache or extensions.

The recommended order is: disable ad blockers, script managers, and privacy/anti-tracking extensions; then clear cookies and site data related to chatgpt.com and openai.com, and restart the browser. If it still doesn’t work, switch to a clean browser profile or simply test with another browser.

CAPTCHA loops are mostly network and risk control issues: IP, DNS, and unsynchronized time

Frequent CAPTCHAs on ChatGPT are commonly triggered by frequent changes in network egress, high latency, or abnormal DNS resolution. First make sure the system time and time zone are set to sync automatically; time drift can cause session validation to fail, showing up as repeated verification prompts or being bounced back during login.

Next, stabilize your network environment: avoid switching back and forth between Wi‑Fi and cellular data or between different nodes; if necessary, restart the router to obtain a stable egress IP. For DNS, you can temporarily switch to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 for comparison; if ChatGPT becomes noticeably more stable after switching, it indicates there’s an issue in the original DNS path.

Account-level restrictions: unusual logins, session invalidation, and recovery steps

If you can open the ChatGPT homepage but get sent back to the login page right after signing in, or it says additional verification is needed, first check whether you’re signed in on multiple devices at the same time and whether you frequently switch regions/networks. Log out of ChatGPT on all devices, then keep only one device and log in again—this can significantly reduce verification loops.

If you’re still stuck, try changing the sign-in method (keep email/Google/Apple consistent; don’t switch back and forth), and update your password and enable stronger two-factor verification options in your account security settings. If you see an explicit account restriction notice, follow the on-page instructions to submit an appeal or contact support, and avoid trying to “brute-force” verification by repeatedly refreshing.
