Common ChatGPT Error Troubleshooting: Send Failed, Rate Limiting, and Unable to Generate Replies

ChatGPT

When using ChatGPT, it’s not uncommon to encounter “Send failed,” “Network error,” or “Something went wrong.” Most issues aren’t with the model itself, but are caused by the network, browser environment, account session, or request frequency. Below is a symptom-based troubleshooting sequence from fastest to slowest to help you restore normal conversations as quickly as possible.

First confirm whether it’s a service outage or a local issue

If ChatGPT suddenly becomes slow across all platforms or throws errors frequently, first switch networks (toggle between a mobile hotspot and home broadband) and try again. This step rules out most connection fluctuations. Next, switch browsers or open an incognito window to log in to ChatGPT. If it works in incognito mode, the issue is usually caused by extensions, cache, or corrupted cookies. If it doesn’t work on different devices either, prioritize the possibility of an invalid account session or temporary service-side congestion.

How to handle “Something went wrong / Network error”

These errors are often caused by an unstable connection, long responses being interrupted midway, or abnormal loading of page resources. First refresh the page and resend. If it still fails, clear the site’s cache and cookies, then log back in to ChatGPT. If you have ad blockers, script managers, or privacy/anti-tracking extensions installed, temporarily disable them; they may block WebSockets or critical scripts, causing ChatGPT conversations to drop.

Rate-limit troubleshooting for “Too many requests / Requests too frequent”

When you see a rate-limit message, don’t keep hammering retry. Pause for a few minutes before sending again—success rates are higher. Splitting what you want to ask into smaller chunks can also reduce timeouts and the likelihood of retries during generation. If you’re using the same account to ask questions frequently on multiple devices at once, reduce concurrency; rapid back-to-back sends within the same chat are also more likely to trigger rate limiting.

Unable to generate a reply, stuck loading, or answers getting cut off

If ChatGPT keeps spinning or stops halfway through a response, first copy what you’ve typed to avoid losing it after a refresh. Then start a new chat and try again. If the new chat works, the old chat’s context may be too long or the page state may be abnormal. If your input includes large code blocks, very long text, or complex tables, send it in segments and ask ChatGPT to “summarize first, then expand,” which can significantly reduce interruptions.

Quick self-check for repeated login redirects or failed verification

For login issues, first check whether your system time is correct, whether the browser blocks third-party cookies, and whether strict tracking protection is enabled; all of these can affect writing the ChatGPT login session. If it keeps bouncing back to the login page, clearing cookies and logging in again usually fixes it. If it still doesn’t work, try switching browsers or networks to quickly determine whether the ChatGPT login issue is caused by the browser environment or the network path.
