ChatGPT Account User Guide: Registration & Login, Email Linking, and Account Switching

2/14/2026
ChatGPT

This tutorial only covers everyday operations for a ChatGPT account: how to register and log in, how to confirm or change your email, and how to quickly switch accounts on both web and mobile. Many issues people run into—“logged into the wrong account,” “can’t recover my old account,” “keeps bouncing back to the login page”—are essentially related to account linking and session management. Follow the steps below and you can generally get your ChatGPT account sorted out.

Registration and login: first confirm what type of account you’re using

After opening the ChatGPT website or app, there are usually three entry points for registration/login: email + verification code (or password), a Google account, and an Apple account. It’s recommended that you stick with one method long-term; otherwise, the same email address may generate different ChatGPT login records under different entry points, which can easily create the illusion of “I clearly registered before, but it says I’m a new user.” After logging in successfully, tap your avatar to enter Settings and confirm that the displayed email is the one you normally use for your ChatGPT account.

Linking and confirming your email: avoid failed recovery later

In your ChatGPT account settings, prioritize keeping your email as a long-term usable address, and make sure you can receive messages normally (including checking your spam folder). If you can’t receive the ChatGPT verification code, first temporarily disable any ad blockers or corporate email gateways, then try sending again. When you need to change your email, follow the change process provided on the settings page; if the page doesn’t provide an entry point, don’t repeatedly attempt to “re-link”—first ensure your current ChatGPT email is usable.

Switching accounts: the easiest approach differs between web and app

On the web, the most reliable way to switch ChatGPT accounts is: click your avatar → Log out → re-select the correct login entry point (email/Google/Apple). If you find that no matter how you log in it keeps returning to the old account, it’s usually because the browser is still retaining the session—clear the site’s cookies, or log in to the target ChatGPT account using an incognito/private window. On mobile, you generally log out from the sidebar/avatar menu and then log back in; if you switch repeatedly on the same device, it’s recommended to confirm the account email shown at the top each time to avoid saving ChatGPT history under another account.

Common sticking points: login loops, wrong account, too many devices—what to do

If ChatGPT keeps spinning or bounces back to the login page, first check your network and browser extensions: switching VPNs/proxies, script plugins, and ad blockers can all affect the login callback. If you logged into the wrong ChatGPT account, don’t just close the page and reopen it—you must “log out” and then choose the right entry point; many people use Google one-click login and end up in another account with the same-name email. If you suspect your account has been logged in on an unfamiliar device, change your password first and then log out of each device in turn; if your account page offers a “two-step verification/MFA” option, it’s recommended to enable it to improve the security of your ChatGPT account.
