Claude User Guide: Email Login, Account Switching, and Multi-Device Sync Setup

Claude

This Claude user guide covers only the three most common things: how to log in to Claude smoothly with email/Google, how to switch between different accounts on the same device, and how to sync chat history between a computer and a phone. Follow the steps and you can basically avoid small issues like “invalid link” and “endless loading spinner.” You don’t need to install any plugins or do any complicated setup.

Sign-up and first login: How to use the email magic link

After opening the Claude official website, common login methods are “Continue with Google” or entering your email to get a login link. If you choose email, Claude will send an email containing a “magic link” to your inbox—just click the link to complete login. It’s best to open the link in the same browser; otherwise Claude may fail to recognize the login session and the login can fail.

If the page keeps loading after you click the link, first check whether the latest email has replaced the old link. Claude’s login links are usually time-limited, and links in older emails often expire. Close the old tab, go back to the Claude login page, and request a new link—it’s more reliable.

Account profile and basic settings: Make Claude easier to use

After logging in to Claude, go to Settings first to check whether your account information is correct (such as the displayed email/login method). It’s recommended to lock in your common chat preferences: language preference, whether to show the sidebar chat history, etc. That way, when you open Claude on different devices, the interface won’t “reset” every time.

If you log in to Claude with Google, you’re essentially authorizing with that Google account, so don’t mix it later with “email login” using the same email address. The two methods look similar in operation, but it’s easy to confuse yourself: the same email address may look consistent, but in reality it may not be the same login path.

Multi-device sync: How to continue chatting on computer and phone

Claude’s chat history is usually tied to your account. As long as you log in to the same Claude account on both your computer and phone, your past conversations will sync and display. You can start a new chat on your phone and then go back to the computer to continue by adding files or long text for a smoother experience. If you find it doesn’t sync, refresh the history list first, then confirm that both sides are logged into the same account (especially don’t mix Google login and email login).

Switching accounts and logging out: Practical ways to avoid mixing accounts

If you need to switch Claude accounts on the same computer, the easiest approach is to use separate browser profiles (“Profile”) or separate incognito windows to log in. That way each window keeps its own cookies, and Claude won’t frequently ask you to re-verify. Before switching, log out within Claude first, then switch windows and log in to the other account—this reduces cases where it “jumps back to the original account.”

If Claude repeatedly redirects you to the login page or shows verification failures, first clear the cache and cookies related to claude.ai, then restart the browser. An unstable network environment can also cause Claude’s login process to get stuck; switching networks often fixes it immediately. As long as you stick to these three points—“use one consistent login method, isolate windows, and don’t use old links”—switching Claude accounts will basically not go wrong.
