Claude FAQ: Dealing with Missing Chat History, Unavailable Features, and Usage Limits

2/16/2026
Claude

This article summarizes the most common snags when using Claude: missing chat history, grayed-out buttons, pages that won’t load, and usage restrictions. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot—most cases can be resolved within minutes.

What to do if the Claude page won’t open or keeps spinning

First rule out network and browser issues: switch networks once (Wi‑Fi/cellular/corporate proxy), then open Claude in incognito mode. If incognito works, it’s usually a cache, extension, or cookie conflict—clearing site data and temporarily disabling blocking extensions is the most effective approach.

If it won’t open on multiple devices, it’s recommended to check Claude’s official status page to see whether there’s maintenance or a partial outage. When the issue is server-side, repeatedly refreshing doesn’t help much—waiting for the status to recover before logging in saves time.

How to recover when Claude chat history is missing or the list is blank

Claude’s history may occasionally appear empty due to account switching or session desynchronization. First confirm that the email you’re currently logged in with is correct, and refresh the page. Then check whether you accidentally opened multiple browser profiles or have multi-account autofill enabled, causing you to actually enter a different Claude account.

If old chats simply don’t display but you can create new ones, try logging out and back in, and clear the site’s cookies before trying again. If nothing changes, prioritize saving key content locally (copy it into a document) to avoid a second accidental misoperation.

Claude buttons are grayed out, can’t send, or features are unavailable

If you can type in Claude’s input box but the “Send” button can’t be clicked, common causes include incomplete page script loading or blocking by extensions. If a refresh doesn’t fix it, try disabling ad blockers/script-blocking extensions, then re-enter Claude.

Also, some feature buttons being grayed out may be permission-related—for example, the browser has blocked clipboard, file access, or pop-ups. Allow the relevant permissions for Claude in your browser settings, and it will usually be restored.

Claude indicates restricted usage, insufficient quota, or asks you to try again later

If Claude shows “try again later/temporarily unavailable,” first reduce the intensity of your request: shorten your input, ask in segments, and reduce the number of chat tabs open at the same time. Network instability can also trigger retries; submitting again after stabilizing the connection has a higher success rate.

If the message is related to usage limits, follow the on-page instructions to complete any required verification or wait for the window to reset. If limits are repeatedly triggered and affect your work, record the exact prompt message and the approximate time, which will help when explaining the situation to official support later.
