If you want to fully back up your ChatGPT chat history locally, the most reliable method is to use “Export data.” This tutorial explains the steps separately for the web and mobile versions, and also covers common issues to help you avoid export failures or not receiving the email.
Before exporting, confirm your account and email are working
ChatGPT’s export file is delivered via an email download link, so first make sure the email address on the currently logged-in account can receive messages normally. It’s recommended to whitelist the sender domain and check the spam folder as well as the “Promotions/Subscriptions” tabs. If you use ChatGPT on multiple devices, try to initiate the export on your primary device to reduce the chance of triggering risk controls.
How to export ChatGPT data on the web
After opening ChatGPT in your browser and logging in, click your profile picture in the lower-left corner to enter “Settings.” Under “Data controls,” find “Export data” and follow the prompts to confirm and submit. After submitting, you’ll usually receive an email from a ChatGPT-related service; open the download link in the email to get the ZIP file.
