ChatGPT Mobile User Guide: Sign-up/Login, Account Switching, and Sync Settings

ChatGPT

This ChatGPT user guide focuses specifically on basic mobile operations: how to sign up and log in on iOS/Android, how to switch accounts correctly, and how to keep chat history reliably synced across multiple devices. Many “can’t log in” or “can’t find history” issues are actually caused by choosing the wrong login method or incorrect sync settings. Follow the steps below and you can usually get everything set up properly in one go.

Download, install, and sign up/log in: Start by using the official entry point

Search for “ChatGPT” in the app store and prioritize the official app developed by OpenAI to avoid installing third-party clients with similar names. After opening ChatGPT, you can register with an email address or use quick sign-in options like “Continue with Google/Apple/Microsoft.” It’s recommended to use an account system you rely on long term.

Note: Remember the login method you used for your first ChatGPT registration. For example, if you created your account with Google, you should continue to log in via Google afterward; switching to “email + password” may be treated as a different account, making you think your “chat history is gone.”

Account switching: On mobile, you usually need to log out first, then log back in

The ChatGPT mobile app generally doesn’t provide a parallel multi-account list. If you want to switch accounts, the most reliable approach is to log out of the current one first. The usual path is: open the sidebar/profile avatar → Settings → find Sign out.

After signing out, return to the login page and sign in with another ChatGPT account. If you find it always “automatically goes back to the original account,” it’s likely because your phone system is still keeping the corresponding Google/Apple sign-in state. On the account selection prompt, explicitly choose the target account.

Conversation sync and history: The toggle settings determine whether you “can see it or not”

After logging into the same ChatGPT account on multiple devices, chat history is generally synced automatically—provided you haven’t turned off the relevant history option. In ChatGPT settings, go to something like Data Controls and check whether “Chat History” / “Chat History & Training” has been turned off.

If you turn off chat history, new conversations may not appear in the history list and may not show up on other devices either. This isn’t a bug; it’s the setting taking effect. To restore syncing, turn it back on, then start a new conversation and see whether it writes back to history normally.

Common sticking points: The recommended order for handling login spinning, verification codes, and blank pages

If ChatGPT gets stuck on a loading spinner during login or shows a blank page, prioritize three actions: switch networks (toggle between Wi‑Fi and cellular), update to the latest app version, and fully close and reopen the app. If it still doesn’t work, then consider clearing the app cache (common on Android) or reinstalling the app (more common on iOS).

If it’s a verification code/email verification issue, first check your spam folder and blocking rules, and confirm that the email you used to register ChatGPT can still receive messages normally; corporate email systems sometimes block verification emails. One last reminder: using the wrong login entry point is the easiest way to end up in “another ChatGPT account.” It can look like a sync failure, but it’s actually just an account mismatch.
