Canvas, recently added to ChatGPT, is a new feature that combines “conversation” and an “editable workspace.” It solves the old problem of repeatedly copying and pasting and losing context after editing a section, letting you write, revise, and debug code on the same page while continuing to discuss with ChatGPT.
What is ChatGPT Canvas: an extra editing area beside the conversation
In ChatGPT Canvas, you no longer see only a stream of chat history; instead, you can place your article or code into an area that feels more like an editor. You can select a specific passage and have ChatGPT rewrite, expand, or explain only that section, making the overall structure clearer as well. For long-form writing and multi-file-style code snippets, the experience of ChatGPT Canvas is smoother than pure chat.
How to use it for writing: revising paragraphs, controlling tone, and unifying style more directly
When writing with ChatGPT Canvas, it’s recommended to first put your outline or draft into Canvas, then have ChatGPT optimize it paragraph by paragraph. For example, you can click and select a paragraph and ask for “more conversational” or “a tone more like product documentation,” avoiding having it mess up the style of the entire piece. When you need to standardize terminology, add transitions, or cut word count, ChatGPT Canvas is also better suited for “local fine-tuning.”
