After subscribing to ChatGPT Plus, many people run into issues like “want to cancel,” “got auto-renewed,” or “was charged twice.” In most cases, this happens because the billing channel and the logged-in account don’t match. Below, we break down the most common pitfalls around ChatGPT Plus refunds and subscription cancellation. Follow the steps to check things yourself, and you can usually resolve it.
First, confirm: Where was your ChatGPT Plus charged from?
There are three common ChatGPT Plus billing sources: web credit/debit card (Stripe), iOS in-app purchase, and Google Play subscription. Refunds and subscription cancellation must be handled through the “original billing channel”—it’s not something you can change just by logging in somewhere else. The most typical case is: you subscribed to ChatGPT Plus through Apple, but you can’t find “Manage subscription” on the web.
If you’re not sure which channel it was, first check your email for charge notifications from OpenAI/Apple/Google, then match the billing descriptor and transaction ID against your statement. Confirming the channel before acting can save you half the time.
How to correctly cancel ChatGPT Plus and turn off auto-renewal
For ChatGPT Plus subscribed on the web, you can usually go to “Manage subscription” from the subscription/billing entry in your account settings, then cancel on the Stripe page. After a successful cancellation, access typically remains until the end of the current billing cycle—it doesn’t mean it ends immediately. It’s recommended that you take a screenshot of Stripe’s cancellation confirmation page in case of disputes later.
For iOS subscriptions, you need to cancel in “Settings - Apple ID - Subscriptions”; for Google Play subscriptions, cancel under “Payments & subscriptions” in the Play Store. Repeatedly logging out and back in on the ChatGPT website won’t turn off auto-renewal.
