ChatGPT Troubleshooting Guide: Too Many Requests, Endless Loading Spinner, and Login Issues

ChatGPT

If you’re seeing ChatGPT stuck on a loading spinner, messages failing to send, or login problems, it’s usually not because your “account is broken.” This guide walks through the most common triggers for a quick check, helping you get back up and running within about 10 minutes whenever possible.

First, confirm whether it’s a server-side issue: avoid wasted effort

The first step in troubleshooting ChatGPT errors is to determine whether the problem is on your end or on the platform’s side. If you see “Something went wrong” and repeated retries, and you can’t send any messages in any conversation, first switch devices or test using a mobile hotspot to see whether the issue persists.

If it doesn’t work on different networks either, prioritize checking OpenAI’s status page (status.openai.com) for outage or congestion notices. When the server is unstable, frequent refreshing will only make things laggier—wait 10–20 minutes and try again.

Endless loading spinner or blank page: usually the browser and cache

If ChatGPT keeps spinning or your chat list is blank, common causes include corrupted cache, extension conflicts, or blocked scripts. First open ChatGPT in an incognito/private window; if it works normally there, it’s very likely an extension or local cache issue.

Recommended order of fixes: disable ad blockers/script-related extensions → clear site data (cookies and cache) → switch browser engines (e.g., Chrome ↔ Edge). If you’re on an enterprise network with content filtering, some resources may fail to load; switching to a home network is often the easiest way to verify.

Send failures and “Too many requests”: control frequency and connection quality

If you see “Too many requests” or get an error immediately after sending, it’s usually because too many requests were made in a short time, or because network jitter caused stacked retries. Pause for 1–2 minutes before sending again, and combine the same question into a single longer message to reduce repeated clicks on Send.

If you often run into Network Error, focus on connection stability: use stable Wi‑Fi when possible, turn off unnecessary VPN/proxy switching, and avoid your network jumping between different egress routes. When uploading files or images, an unstable network is even more likely to fail—make sure the web app can reliably send plain text first, then continue.

Login issues and repeated verification: start with your account and device

If ChatGPT login redirects you back to the home page, repeatedly asks for CAPTCHA verification, or says it can’t verify your email, first ensure your system time is set to sync automatically—time drift can affect login token validation. Then try signing out of all device sessions and logging in again, and avoid frequently switching accounts across multiple devices at the same time.

If you’re using a corporate/campus network, it may trigger stricter risk-control verification; switching to a mobile hotspot can usually pinpoint the cause quickly. If you still can’t log in after this round of ChatGPT troubleshooting, check whether your email can receive verification codes normally and whether your browser has disabled third-party cookies.
