ChatGPT FAQ: Handling Login Issues, Unsynced Chats, and Interrupted Responses

ChatGPT

This article compiles several of the most common issues users encounter with ChatGPT: being unable to log in, chat history not syncing, reply generation getting interrupted, and abnormal behavior when downloading or sharing. For each issue, it provides a practical troubleshooting sequence; following the steps usually restores ChatGPT to normal use.

What to do about login issues and not receiving verification codes

When ChatGPT login gets stuck on the verification page, first try switching browsers or retrying in an incognito/private window, and disable extensions that block scripts (ad blockers and script managers are the most common). If you can’t receive the verification code, start by checking your email spam folder and the “Promotions/Subscriptions” category, then add the sender to your allowlist and resend.

If repeated attempts on the same network still fail, switch networks (for example, from a corporate network to a mobile hotspot) and clear browser cookies before logging in to ChatGPT again. If you’re using third-party single sign-on (such as Google/Apple), make sure that account can log in normally on the current device, then return to ChatGPT to authorize.

Chat history not syncing / unable to see past conversations

When ChatGPT chats aren’t syncing, first confirm whether you’ve switched accounts or workspaces (even under the same email, different login methods may exist). Then refresh the page, or log out and back into ChatGPT—many “blank list” cases are just temporary loading failures.

If you can see the history on mobile but not on the web, it’s usually caused by browser cache or extension interference. Add the ChatGPT site to “allow third-party cookies” or temporarily disable privacy-related extensions, then check whether the conversation list returns.

Reply generation interrupted, endless loading spinner, or no response

If ChatGPT “spins for a long time,” stop the generation and resend the same sentence; if it happens frequently, split your input into sections and avoid pasting large blocks of text all at once. Unstable networks can also cause interruptions—use ChatGPT on a stable connection and avoid opening too many tabs that consume resources.

If failures keep happening in a specific conversation, start a new chat to test: if the new chat works, it indicates that the thread’s content triggered a system block or the context is too long. In that case, extract the key question and ask ChatGPT separately for a higher success rate.

Abnormal issues with file downloads, copy/paste, and share links

If copying code or tables from ChatGPT results in messy formatting, first compare the two options—“copy as plain text” vs. “keep formatting”—and disable automatic formatting/corrections in the target software. If a share link won’t open, first confirm the other party’s network can access the ChatGPT page, and have them open the link directly in the same browser.

Common causes of download failures include browser download permissions being disabled or security software blocking the download. Check the browser “Downloads” settings and system security prompts; if necessary, switch browsers and retry downloading from ChatGPT.

When you need to contact official support

If you can’t log in to ChatGPT across multiple devices and networks, or you see prompts such as account restrictions or inability to verify, it’s recommended to go through official channels. Open the Help entry in the bottom-right corner of the ChatGPT page, or visit the OpenAI Help Center to submit a ticket. Include a screenshot of the error, the steps to reproduce, and your browser version to speed up processing.
