ChatGPT Account Security Settings Guide: Link Your Phone Number and Enable Two-Factor Authentication

If you want to use your ChatGPT account more reliably and worry less about it being stolen, it’s recommended to add your phone number and enable two-factor authentication. Below, the real step-by-step path is laid out clearly: enter the account management page from within ChatGPT, complete the linking and verification settings, and address common stumbling blocks along the way.

1. First, confirm the entry point: jump from ChatGPT to the account management page

Open the ChatGPT web version, click your avatar in the bottom-left corner (or the personal entry in the top-right), and go to “Settings.” Under “Account,” find “Manage account,” which will open OpenAI’s account management page.

Most phone-number and two-factor authentication settings are completed on this account management page, rather than being changed directly on the chat page.

2. Link a phone number to ChatGPT: for security checks and risk-control verification

On the account management page, find the item related to “Phone,” follow the prompts to enter your phone number, and receive an SMS verification code. The code usually expires; if you enter it incorrectly or it times out, just resend it.

If your ChatGPT account has previously triggered login risk controls, the system may also ask for SMS verification again during login or sensitive actions; linking in advance can reduce the chance of getting stuck unexpectedly.

3. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA): add an extra “lock” to ChatGPT

In “Security” on the account management page, find “Multi-factor authentication.” After choosing to enable it, use an authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, etc.) to scan the QR code and add it, then enter a one-time code to complete setup.

After it’s enabled, ChatGPT will require a verification code when you sign in on a new device. Be sure to save the backup recovery codes (Backup codes) provided by the system. Don’t rely on a screenshot stored only in your phone’s photo album—sync them to a password manager instead.

4. Common issues: not receiving SMS, code not accepted, what to do if you lose your device

If you’re not receiving SMS, first check whether messages are being blocked or whether your carrier’s SMS filtering has changed; wait a bit and resend, and avoid clicking repeatedly to prevent temporary rate limiting. If MFA codes aren’t being accepted, prioritize syncing your phone’s system time (automatic time/time zone), since time drift can cause TOTP codes to fail.

If you change phones or lose your authenticator data, use your backup recovery codes to sign in, then go back to the security page to disable and re-enable MFA for ChatGPT. If you don’t have recovery codes, you’ll have to go through the account recovery process, which will take longer.
