The most practical part of this update is that ChatGPT’s memory feature has become truly “controllable.” It can remember your preferences and context in future conversations, but you can also view, delete, or turn it off with one click at any time—so it doesn’t get more and more “clingy” the more you use it.
What exactly does ChatGPT’s memory feature remember?
ChatGPT’s memory feature doesn’t memorize every sentence you say. Instead, it turns preferences that are useful to you into “reusable information.” For example, your usual tone, work context, or long-term project settings—so you don’t have to repeat yourself every time you ask something.
When ChatGPT’s memory feature is updated, the interface usually shows a prompt like “Memory updated.” You can click in to confirm exactly what it has saved, to avoid incorrect memories or saving too much.
How to enable, view, and delete items in ChatGPT’s memory feature
You can manage ChatGPT’s memory feature in the “Personalization” options in Settings, including turning it on/off, viewing the list, deleting items one by one, or clearing everything. If you want something more direct, you can also say things like “Remember this” or “Forget that last one” in the chat, and the memory feature will adjust according to your instructions.
If you only want to ask sensitive questions temporarily, it’s recommended to use “Temporary Chat” mode, so ChatGPT’s memory feature won’t participate or accumulate anything, and the chat also won’t be saved to your history.
