ChatGPT Troubleshooting: Message Send Failures, Network Errors, and File Upload Issues

If ChatGPT won’t open, shows “Network error,” or keeps loading, in most cases it’s not that “your account is broken,” but that the network, browser cache, or upload requirements aren’t being met. Below is ChatGPT error troubleshooting by the most common scenarios—from the quickest checks to targeted fixes—to help you get back to normal use within a few minutes.

First, do two quick checks: service status and your local environment

Before troubleshooting ChatGPT errors, first rule out server-side fluctuations: open OpenAI’s status page to see whether there is “Degraded performance.” If the status is abnormal, no matter what you do locally it’s hard to fix immediately—you can only wait for recovery.

If the status is normal, then check locally: switch to another network (mobile hotspot/corporate network) for comparison to quickly determine whether it’s a routing/connection issue. Then try logging into ChatGPT in an incognito window. Incognito avoids most cache and extension interference and is the easiest dividing line to test.

Messages won’t send or the page freezes: common fix order

If ChatGPT shows “Something went wrong” or there’s no response after sending, refresh the page and retry the same message first. If it still fails, clear this site’s cache and cookies, then log back into ChatGPT—many “endless loading spinner” issues disappear immediately.

If it only fails in one browser, focus on extensions: ad blockers, script managers, and privacy/anti-tracking plugins are the most likely to block requests. Temporarily disable these extensions, or switch to a clean browser profile—this is a more reliable way to troubleshoot ChatGPT errors.

File/image upload failures: format, size, and permissions—three things

When ChatGPT uploads fail, first check whether the file is too large and whether the format is common (for example, use PNG/JPG for images first, and PDF/standard Office formats for documents). Also make sure the filename doesn’t contain special symbols or an overly long path, as that can sometimes cause the upload endpoint to error out directly.

If the same file keeps failing, verify in another way: compress the image or “Save As” to a new file and upload again, or export the document as a PDF and then upload. If it still doesn’t work, try turning off the browser setting “Block third-party cookies/Strict tracking protection,” as some security policies can affect ChatGPT uploads and session persistence.

Frequent errors or restrictions: too many requests, session issues, and risk-control prompts

If you see “Too many requests” or frequent failures in a short time, you’ve usually hit a rate limit: pause for a few minutes and try again, and avoid rapid consecutive refreshes or repeated submissions. Splitting a long question into two or three parts can also reduce single-request load and cut down on repeated ChatGPT troubleshooting.

If you see abnormal login behavior, frequent verification pop-ups, or access restrictions, first make sure you aren’t logging into the same account at high frequency across multiple devices. Log out of all device sessions and then log back into ChatGPT, and check whether you’re using a network environment that causes frequent region/route changes; maintaining a stable connection is usually more effective than repeated retries.
