ChatGPT Troubleshooting Guide: Login issues, network errors, and unavailable features

If ChatGPT won’t open, shows an error, or features suddenly stop working, it’s usually not that your “account is dead,” but rather a combination of network issues, browser cache, or server-side fluctuations. This article breaks common ChatGPT problems into actionable troubleshooting steps, arranged from easiest to hardest. Follow them and you can usually pinpoint the issue within ten minutes.

Start with your network and browser: the biggest time-saver

If the ChatGPT page is blank, keeps loading, or shows “Something went wrong,” switch networks first: switch from Wi‑Fi to cellular data, or vice versa, to test once. Then open ChatGPT in Incognito/Private mode to rule out extensions and cache interference; also temporarily disable ad blockers, script managers, and privacy/anti-tracking extensions.

If it works in Incognito, it’s more reliable to clear site data in normal mode: delete the cache and cookies related to chat.openai.com in your browser. Finally, make sure your system time is set to sync automatically—time drift can also cause ChatGPT login and session validation to fail.

Login failures and CAPTCHA issues: prioritize fixing “environment mismatches”

If ChatGPT login keeps bouncing back to the homepage or gets stuck on the verification page, a common cause is third-party cookies being blocked or cross-site tracking being restricted too strictly. Temporarily turn off “Block third-party cookies” in your browser, or add chat.openai.com to the allowlist, then try logging in again.

If you’re not receiving the verification email, first check your spam folder and “Promotions/Subscriptions” categories, and confirm your mailbox isn’t full. If you frequently switch devices or network nodes, ChatGPT may trigger a stricter verification flow; it’s recommended to complete one stable login under the same network environment before switching devices.

Messages won’t send / frequent errors: start with the chat session and load

If you get an error immediately after sending input or replies get interrupted, create a new chat to test first, to avoid issues caused by an overly long conversation leading to rendering or context problems. Then simplify what you send: remove very long pasted text, reduce the number of images/files uploaded at once, and send in segments for better stability.

If you see a “too many requests” message or something like “429,” wait a minute or two before sending again, and avoid repeatedly refreshing the page in quick succession. If you encounter server errors like “500/502,” it’s usually a temporary fluctuation on ChatGPT’s side—try a different time or use a different browser to see whether it has recovered.

Unavailable features and permission anomalies: confirm the entry point and account status

The same account may show different features depending on the entry point: make sure you’re using the official ChatGPT page, and complete email and security verification. If certain feature buttons are grayed out or missing, log out of ChatGPT and log back in, then check whether overly strict content filtering, enterprise network policies, or browser policy restrictions are enabled.

If it still won’t recover, do a final cross-check using the combination of “switch device + switch network + Incognito/Private mode”: if any one setup works normally, the issue is with the local environment rather than the ChatGPT account itself. If all environments fail, then consider contacting official support and include screenshots of the error and steps to reproduce—it will be handled faster.
