Claude Multi-Account Switching Guide: Browser Profiles, Incognito Login, and Session Isolation

If you want to switch between Claude accounts on the same device, the key is to isolate the login state and chat history to avoid the “logged out but automatically logged back in” problem. This Claude account switching tutorial provides three approaches for common scenarios: safely signing out and signing back in, staying online simultaneously via browser profiles, and temporary login with incognito mode—plus fixes for common sticking points.

First, understand this: what switching Claude accounts affects

Switching Claude accounts essentially means switching the login session for claude.ai in your browser; the chat list and saved conversations change with the Claude account. Conversations you see in Claude account A typically won’t appear after switching to Claude account B—this is normal “account-level isolation.” If you find that the conversations don’t change after switching, in most cases you didn’t actually sign out, or the browser auto-filled the session and pushed you back in.

Method 1: Safely sign out and sign in again on the Claude web app (most reliable)

On the Claude web app, open the personal menu in the top-right corner, find Sign out, and confirm to fully end the current Claude account session. After signing out, go back to the login page and choose the corresponding sign-in method (email or third-party sign-in) to enter the target Claude account. After each switch, it’s recommended to refresh the page once and check whether the chat list on the left has changed to confirm the switch was successful.

Method 2: Use browser “profiles/users” to keep multiple Claude accounts online at the same time

If you need to keep two Claude accounts logged in simultaneously, don’t keep signing out and back in—using your browser’s “profiles/users” feature is more convenient. For example, in Chrome or Edge, create a new user profile; each profile stores cookies and cache separately, which is effectively two independent environments. This way, you can keep Claude account A in your main profile and Claude account B in the second profile, preventing cross-account mix-ups and reducing the chance of accidentally sending work conversations to your personal Claude account.

Method 3: Temporarily log in to a Claude account in an incognito window (most convenient for one-off use)

If you only need to use another Claude account temporarily and don’t want to change your current login state, open an incognito window, visit claude.ai, and sign in. After the incognito window is closed, the login state is usually cleared automatically, making it suitable for borrowing a device or handling short tasks. Note that in incognito mode the browser may block third-party cookies more strictly; if you run into repeated redirects, switching to “Method 1” will be more reliable.

Common fixes: What to do if it’s still the old Claude account after switching

If you clearly signed out but Claude automatically returns you to the old account, first clear site data related to claude.ai (cookies and cache), then sign in again to the target Claude account. Another common cause is browser extensions (ad blockers, privacy add-ons, script managers) interfering with the login flow—try disabling them temporarily and then retry. If you can’t receive the verification code, check your spam folder and email rules first; if that still doesn’t work, change your network environment or wait a bit before requesting the code again to avoid triggering risk controls by requesting too frequently in a short time.
