ChatGPT User Guide: Third-Party Login Linking and Passkey Security Setup Guide

This ChatGPT user guide focuses specifically on account security: how to sign in with Google/Apple, complete your email information, and enable passkeys on supported devices. After following the steps, ChatGPT login will be more stable, and you can reduce account hijacking risks as well as repeated captcha issues.

1. First, confirm your current ChatGPT login method

After opening and logging into the ChatGPT web version, go to “Settings” in the personal menu at the bottom right. On the account-related page, check whether you sign in via “Continue with Google/Apple” or “email + password,” as this affects whether you can directly change your password or add verification methods later. If you’ve always used third-party sign-in, you typically don’t need to set a separate ChatGPT password, but you do need to ensure the third-party account itself is secure.

2. Sign in with Google/Apple and complete your email information

After logging out of ChatGPT, return to the login page and choose “Continue with Google” or “Continue with Apple.” Authorize using your commonly used primary account. After logging into ChatGPT, it’s recommended to verify in Settings that your email is a valid address you regularly check, so you won’t lose access when receiving security alerts or completing verification later. If you chose “Hide My Email” when signing in with Apple, set up your forwarding email properly to ensure you can receive messages.

3. Enable a passkey to improve ChatGPT login security

Passkeys generally rely on your device’s fingerprint/Face ID/screen lock and are more convenient on supported browsers and systems. Go to ChatGPT’s settings and the security-related options, find “Passkey,” and follow the prompts to add one; during the process, you may be asked to confirm with a system popup using your fingerprint or Face ID. After it’s added, prioritize signing in with a passkey—it can significantly reduce captcha loops or blocks triggered by logins from different locations.

4. Security wrap-up when switching devices or sharing a computer

If you’ve logged into ChatGPT on a public computer, be sure to fully sign out when you exit, and clear any browser-saved accounts and autofill data. It’s recommended to periodically check logged-in devices/sessions (if the page provides this entry point) and immediately sign out of any unfamiliar sessions. Users who sign in via third parties should also check the list of logged-in devices for their Google/Apple account—only then is your ChatGPT security truly closed-loop.

5. Common sticking points: authorization failures or being redirected back to the login page

If third-party sign-in fails, first disable the browser’s ad blocker/script blocker, then clear cookies related to OpenAI and try again. If you keep getting sent back to the login page, try a different browser or an incognito/private window—this usually rules out extension conflicts. If it still doesn’t work, first confirm whether your Google/Apple account itself can sign in normally and whether two-factor authentication is available, because ChatGPT will follow the third party’s security policies to block abnormal login attempts.
