If you want Claude to last longer, the key isn’t asking more—it’s redoing less. Ask the question right and manage the context well, and you can save a large chunk of Claude’s message quota.

Write “requirements + constraints + deliverables” in one go

The biggest quota drain with Claude is often the back-and-forth to clarify details. If you clearly state the goal, audience, constraints (word count/tone/whether sources may be cited), and the output structure you want from the start, Claude will take far fewer detours.

For example, don’t just say “Help me write copy,” but instead say “For Xiaohongshu, within 120 Chinese characters, three-paragraph structure, avoid exaggerated wording, and provide 3 alternative titles.” For the same question, Claude will be much closer to a usable draft on the first try, saving the cost of second and third rounds of revisions.

Create a reusable set of Claude prompt templates

Saving your commonly used opening prompts as templates is one of the most reliable money-saving tips for Claude. You can prepare “writing templates, rewriting templates, proofreading templates, summarization templates,” and each time only swap in the variable information, avoiding having to improvise wording on the spot.

It’s recommended to lock in three things in the template: the scope of input materials, the output format, and refusals (e.g., don’t fabricate data / don’t add cases). Claude’s output will be more consistent, and you won’t need to keep adding extra instructions.

Control context: “compress” long conversations before continuing

Claude incorporates conversation history into its understanding; the longer the chat gets, the more “expensive” it becomes. When you notice the conversation has gone many rounds, first have Claude compress the current conclusions into a bullet-point “work memo,” then start a new conversation and paste the memo in to continue.

The benefit is: Claude can still carry the line of thinking forward, but doesn’t need to repeatedly carry a lengthy chat log. For multi-round tasks like writing, proposals, and scripts, the savings are especially noticeable.

Start rough, then refine: ask for a framework first, then fine-tune key paragraphs

Many people ask Claude to “write the final draft” right away, which leads to big changes and lots of back-and-forth. A more economical approach is to have Claude produce an outline or structure first, then only do intensive polishing and rewriting for the two or three most critical paragraphs.

Also, when revising, don’t ask Claude to “rewrite the whole thing”; instead, be explicit: “Only revise paragraph 2, keep the original meaning, and output a side-by-side comparison.” This kind of localized iteration can significantly reduce Claude’s output length and is more controllable.
