Always stuck on a blank page or endless loading spinner? A step-by-step ChatGPT troubleshooting order—from browser to network fixes

ChatGPT

When ChatGPT suddenly turns into a blank page, keeps spinning, or doesn’t respond after you click Send, it’s usually not that your “account is broken”—it’s more likely your browser cache, extensions, or network path causing trouble. Below is a prioritized ChatGPT troubleshooting sequence to get ChatGPT back to normal with as few steps as possible.

First, do a two-minute self-check: browser, extensions, incognito mode

When ChatGPT freezes, first open an incognito/private window and log in to try once—this bypasses most cache and extension interference. Next, temporarily disable extensions like ad blockers, script managers, translation plugins, and privacy/anti-tracking tools, then refresh the ChatGPT page to see whether it immediately returns to normal.

If it works in incognito but not in a normal window, it’s basically an extension or site-data issue. Keep only the essential extensions, re-enable them one by one, find the one that conflicts with ChatGPT, then uninstall it or add ChatGPT to its allowlist.

Blank page and endless spinning: clearing site data is more effective than “clearing cache”

If ChatGPT shows a blank page or keeps loading, it’s often due to old site data (cookies, Local Storage) causing session anomalies. In your browser, it’s recommended to specifically “clear site data” for chatgpt.com (or the actual domain you visit), rather than clearing all cached data in one go, to avoid affecting logins on other websites.

After clearing, reopen ChatGPT and sign in again; if it still keeps spinning, try switching to a different browser engine (for example, switch between Chrome and Edge). Also make sure your browser is updated to the latest version—older versions may have incomplete support for certain script features and can easily cause the ChatGPT frontend to freeze.

You can open the page but can’t send: check the network, proxy, and corporate firewall

If clicking the Send button does nothing or you keep getting “network error,” the fastest thing is to switch networks: change from Wi‑Fi to a mobile hotspot, or vice versa. If you’re on a company or campus network, gateway policies may block some connections, making ChatGPT appear to load while requests fail.

If you use a proxy/VPN, try to keep the node stable and avoid frequent switching; node instability can cause ChatGPT conversation requests to time out or be interrupted. You can also open the browser Developer Tools Network tab to see whether many requests are failing, but the more practical approach is usually to run through the two steps “switch networks + disable extensions” first.

Sidebar won’t load, history won’t sync: check service status first, then do recovery steps

ChatGPT history can occasionally fall out of sync briefly. First check status.openai.com to see whether there’s a service disruption; if it’s a server-side issue, no amount of local tinkering will fix it immediately. If the service is normal but the sidebar is still blank, log out and back in once—this often rebuilds the session and restores history.

Only as a last step should you reinstall the app or reset your browser settings, because those are the most costly. Follow the ChatGPT troubleshooting sequence above, and most “blank page, spinning, can’t send messages” issues can be identified and resolved within ten minutes.
