Claude How-To: Sign Up & Log In, Switch Accounts, and Set Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

This Claude tutorial focuses on three high-frequency tasks: how to sign up and log in to Claude, how to switch between multiple accounts, and how to complete Claude’s security settings. If you follow the steps once, you can avoid most common login and permission problems.

1. Claude sign-up and first-time login

Open your browser and go to Claude’s official website (claude.ai). Click the log in/sign up entry point, then follow the on-screen prompts to register with an email address or sign in with a third-party account. If you register by email, Claude will typically ask you to verify your email—open your inbox and click the confirmation link to continue. After you enter Claude for the first time, it’s a good idea to check the account details under the profile/avatar menu in the top-right corner to confirm you’re signed in to the Claude account you actually want to use.

If you’re using Claude on a company network or a public network, try not to enable options like “stay signed in.” This reduces the risk of someone else accessing your account and also makes later Claude account switching and management easier.

2. Claude account security: password and two-step verification

After entering Claude, open the settings/security-related page from the profile/avatar menu. First, set a unique, strong password (don’t reuse your email password). If Claude offers two-step verification (2FA), it’s recommended to enable it right away—commonly by linking an authenticator app that generates time-based codes. Once enabled, logging in to Claude on a new device will usually require an extra verification step, which can significantly reduce the risk of account takeover.

It’s also a good idea to review the email address you use to log in to Claude: make sure you can receive emails normally and that verification emails aren’t being over-filtered as spam. Many “Claude verification email not received” cases are actually caused by the email provider misclassifying the message or by your own filtering rules.

3. How to switch Claude accounts and sign out safely

When you need to switch Claude accounts, the most reliable method is to sign out from the profile/avatar menu first, then sign in again with the other account. Some browsers may return you to the old account due to caching or autofill. In that case, open an incognito/private window and sign in to the new Claude account there—this is usually cleaner. If multiple people share the same computer, it’s recommended to manually sign out of Claude every time you’re done and avoid letting the browser save your Claude password.

If you use Claude on both your phone and your computer, pay attention to whether both devices have updated to the same account state after you switch. Many “I switched Claude accounts but the data didn’t change” issues are essentially because another device is still holding onto the old session.

4. What to check when login gets stuck or verification fails

If the Claude login page gets stuck, start with two actions: refresh, then clear site cache (only Claude-related site data), and try a different network or disable browser extensions that might block scripts. If you can’t open the verification email link or you keep getting redirected back to the login page, copy the verification link and open it in a new tab in the same browser to avoid interruptions caused by redirects. If you’ve enabled two-step verification and your one-time code still fails, first check whether your phone time is set to sync automatically—time drift can invalidate Claude’s authenticator codes.

If none of the above works, avoid retrying too many times in a row to prevent triggering temporary risk controls. Instead, wait for a while before logging in to Claude again, or use an incognito/private window to complete the Claude login and account switching process.
