ChatGPT Troubleshooting: Fix Image Upload Failures, Interrupted Responses, and Unavailable Models

If ChatGPT shows errors, gets stuck, or features are grayed out, it’s usually not that your account is “broken”—it’s more often a browser, network, or session issue. Below are the most common scenarios for ChatGPT troubleshooting. Follow these steps to isolate the cause and get things working again.

Start with three basic checks: browser, network, and service status

When troubleshooting ChatGPT, first do a hard refresh (Windows: Ctrl+F5, Mac: Command+Shift+R). Many “endless loading” issues recover immediately. Next, open ChatGPT in an incognito/private window to avoid extensions or old cache interfering with requests.

If it’s still acting up, switch networks (mobile hotspot/another Wi‑Fi) to confirm whether it’s a local network restriction. At the same time, check status.openai.com for any service disruption. If there’s an incident on the server side, ChatGPT may time out intermittently or fail to send messages—waiting for recovery is often the best option in that case.

Image/file upload failed: check format, size, and permissions

The most common causes of ChatGPT upload failures are oversized files, incompatible formats, or browser permission issues. Convert images to common formats (such as JPG/PNG) and compress them before uploading again. Keep filenames to English letters and numbers when possible, since special characters can sometimes trigger parsing issues.

If the upload button is clickable but it keeps failing, first check whether your browser has blocked site permissions (pop-ups, storage, third-party cookies). For this type of ChatGPT troubleshooting, it also helps to temporarily disable ad blockers or script-management extensions, or try again in Chrome/Edge.

Messages won’t send / responses stop midway: the session or connection likely dropped

If ChatGPT shows “failed to send” or the response cuts off halfway through, copy and save your text first to avoid losing it. Then start a new chat and resend, or split your content into two or three parts—long messages are more likely to drop on unstable connections.

If you frequently see “Network error/connection error,” this is a classic ChatGPT troubleshooting case: turn off your VPN or switch nodes, avoid corporate proxy networks, and reconnect (including restarting your router connection). If it’s still unstable, reduce concurrent actions for a short time (for example, don’t upload files while rapidly sending follow-up prompts).

Model unavailable / features grayed out: check both account access and client state

If the model list is missing or certain features can’t be clicked, log out and back in first—this is often a display issue caused by an expired session token. Next, confirm you’re using the correct account (switching accounts by mistake can make features appear to “disappear”).

Also, different accounts and regions may not see the exact same models and features. When troubleshooting ChatGPT, it’s a good idea to verify on both the web app and the mobile app to tell whether it’s a device-side issue or account-side access. If both are abnormal while the status page looks normal, contact official support and include an error screenshot plus the time it occurred to speed up diagnosis.
