ChatGPT Export & Manage Chat History: How to Download, Clear, and Turn Off History

Want to back up your ChatGPT conversations locally or clear your history completely? The key settings are all under Data controls. Below are step-by-step paths for both the web version and the mobile app, plus how to use the exported files and how to handle common sticking points.

Export ChatGPT chat history on the web (email download as a ZIP)

On the ChatGPT web app, click your avatar or name in the bottom-left corner to open Settings. In Settings, find Data controls, choose Export data, and submit the request.

After you submit, the system sends an email to your account’s email address with a download link—usually within a few minutes to a few dozen minutes. The download is a compressed ZIP file. After extracting it, you’ll see your conversation data files and an information page, which is useful for backup and record-keeping.

Export and back up on mobile: shorter path, but don’t miss permissions

In the ChatGPT app, tap the top-right menu or your profile icon to enter Settings, then go to Data controls. Tap Export data; you’ll still receive the download link by email.

If you can’t download from the email link on your phone, copy the link and open it in your device’s system browser, then save it to Files/Downloads. Some email apps block or interfere with redirects; switching to a browser often works better.

Clear history and turn off chat history: stop ChatGPT from saving chats

To wipe everything at once, go to Data controls in Settings, find Clear all chats, and confirm. After clearing, the chat list in the sidebar will be removed—so it’s best to export first if you want a backup.

If you don’t want future conversations to appear in your history, turn off Chat history in the same section. Once disabled, new chats won’t be saved to the sidebar history, which can be preferable for one-off questions or sensitive topics.

Export failed or no email received: the 3 most common causes

First, the email may be delayed or filtered into spam—check Spam/Promotions/Subscriptions folders and add the sender’s domain to your allowlist. Second, you may be signed into ChatGPT with an email address you don’t regularly check; the export email goes to the address tied to the account you’re currently using.

Third, network issues or browser extensions may block the request. Try temporarily disabling ad blockers or privacy extensions, or retry in an incognito/private window. If you still don’t receive anything after repeated attempts, wait a while and submit another export request to avoid triggering risk controls from too many requests in a short time.
