Claude Setup Guide: How to Sign Up, Manage Your Account, and Switch Devices Safely

Claude

This Claude guide covers three things only: how to sign up and log in to Claude, how to confirm and manage your account details, and how to switch safely between multiple devices and multiple accounts. Follow the steps below to resolve common problems such as login confusion, using the wrong account, or web sessions not syncing.

Registering a Claude Account and Your First Login

Go to the official Claude website (claude.ai), click the sign in/sign up entry, and follow the on-screen prompts to register with email or log in via a third-party account. If you choose email, you’ll typically need to verify with an email code, then set up basic profile details to enter the Claude chat page. After you enter Claude for the first time, it’s recommended to finish language and basic preference settings to avoid frequent changes in output style later.

Account “Linking/Verification”: Focus on Your Email and Login Method

What many people call “linking” in Claude is closer to “confirming which login method you’re using,” especially if you’ve used different entry points such as email and Google, which can easily cause confusion. Open the personal menu in the top-right of the Claude page, go to Settings/account-related pages, and verify that the currently signed-in email and account identifier are correct. If you want to consistently use one fixed method to access Claude long-term, try to stick to the same login method and avoid switching back and forth between different sign-in options, reducing cases where it looks like you’re on a “new account.”

How to Switch Claude Accounts: Web vs. App

To switch Claude accounts on the web, the most reliable approach is to log out from the personal menu first, then log in again with the target account to avoid interference from old session cache. If you need to use two Claude accounts at the same time, use separate browser user profiles (such as different Chrome Profiles) or separate incognito windows to log in separately so cookies won’t conflict. On the mobile app, you generally also log out in Settings and then log in again; before switching, confirm your current chats and projects have been saved under the correct account.

Common Issues After Switching: Missing Chats, Mixed Projects, and Permission Mismatches

If your “chat history disappears” after switching Claude accounts, it’s usually not deleted—you’re most likely signed into a different account or a different workspace/organization space. If your project list or permissions seem out of sync, first check whether you’re in the correct space, then refresh the page or log out and log back in once; this typically restores consistency. To reduce mistakes, it’s recommended to use different avatars/nicknames for different Claude accounts, and label your browser bookmarks clearly (for example, “Work account” vs. “Personal account”).
