ChatGPT Troubleshooting FAQ: Not Receiving Verification Codes, Account Restrictions, and Network Errors

ChatGPT

Not receiving a verification code: check your email filters first

If ChatGPT asks for an email verification code when you sign in, start by checking Spam/Junk, Promotions, and any corporate email filtering rules—many codes get automatically routed there. Then confirm you entered the correct email address, whether you used an alias address, and whether your inbox is full (which can cause delivery failures).

If you enabled two-factor authentication, ChatGPT more commonly uses a rotating code from an authenticator app rather than an email code. Make sure your phone’s time is set to “Set automatically”—time drift can make codes invalid immediately. If you can’t access your authenticator, use the backup codes you saved earlier to recover access, then re-link your authenticator in your account security settings.

Login fails or keeps bouncing back to the sign-in page: cache and authorization are the usual causes

If ChatGPT shows “login succeeded” but then sends you back to the login page, it’s usually because browser cache/Cookies or privacy extensions blocked the session from being saved. Try testing in an incognito/private window first, then clear site data related to OpenAI, or temporarily disable ad blockers and script-blocking extensions.

Also check whether you accidentally created multiple account identities (for example, using the same email with different sign-in methods). Switching between “Continue with email” and “Continue with a third-party account” can make it feel like you logged in, when you actually entered a different identity.

“Request error” / “Network error”: check the status page, then your network

If ChatGPT shows request errors or won’t load conversations, first visit status.openai.com to confirm whether there’s a service incident. If the status looks normal, troubleshoot your local network. Common cases include workplace networks, campus networks, or DNS issues causing some resources to fail to load.

Try switching networks (Wi‑Fi vs. mobile data) to compare results, then test by changing DNS to a reliable public DNS. The ChatGPT web app can also run into compatibility issues if your browser is outdated—keeping your browser updated is usually the simplest fix.

Account restricted or reduced availability: start with security and abuse signals

If ChatGPT indicates your account is restricted or requires extra verification, it’s often related to unusual login activity, frequent IP switching, or risk-control triggers. Start by changing your password, confirming two-factor authentication is enabled, and reviewing recent login activity in your account security page to make sure there are no unknown devices.

If ChatGPT explicitly says you violated a policy or need to appeal, don’t keep retrying logins or constantly refreshing—this can make it harder for restrictions to lift. Submit a support ticket via help.openai.com with screenshots, your account email, and the approximate time it happened for faster resolution.

Missing chats and history: confirm whether chat history is turned off

If your ChatGPT conversations “disappear,” first confirm you didn’t switch to another account, and check whether you enabled temporary chats or turned off chat history. With history disabled, new chats may not appear in the sidebar, which is easy to mistake for data loss.

In addition, local browser issues can prevent the list from loading completely: if refreshing doesn’t help, try signing out and back in, or check on another device. If you can see the same conversation on another device, it’s very likely a display issue caused by local cache or network conditions.
