OpenClaw, a personal AI agent positioned as being able to “handle tasks for you,” has recently gone viral: it can connect to email, calendars, and external services, turning instructions into real-world actions. Some content creators have showcased even more aggressive use cases—building a “dream assistant” in just a few weeks that can automate workflows like customer support and invoicing, highlighting a jump in efficiency from conversation to execution. At the same time, discussion around this kind of agent tool has quickly shifted to risk: when an AI not only “answers” but also has “execution permissions,” the potential impact is no longer limited to incorrect outputs, but may directly affect user data and business operations.

One user explained in a column that they stopped using OpenClaw for two main reasons: insufficient product maturity and security gaps. “Insufficient maturity” mainly shows up in how rough the system still feels, with limited controllability and stability: when an agent needs to complete a task across multiple apps, it’s hard for users to review each step as clearly as they could audit a script. If something goes wrong, the cost may be amplified. More critical is security: tools like this often require access to sensitive resources such as email, files, payments, or ticketing systems, and misconfigured permissions can lead to data exposure or unintended actions. Related reporting also notes that OpenClaw-like automation agents, with their broad ability to connect to external services, create a sharper trade-off between convenience and risk.

The risk isn’t just theoretical. In public discussions, some users said they had allowed a bot to delete large volumes of old emails in a short time, underscoring the irreversible nature of “execution.” Security researchers also warn that if an AI agent product—or the account system it relies on—is compromised, attackers could leverage existing permissions to manipulate the agent against the user, turning it into an efficient “automated attack interface.” Looking ahead, for personal AI agents to go mainstream, the key isn’t only stronger capabilities but safer defaults: finer-grained permission controls, mandatory confirmations and rollback mechanisms, traceable operation logs, and isolation and rate-limiting for high-risk actions will determine whether these tools can move from “impressive demos” to “something you can trust long-term.”
