According to The Atlantic, OpenAI has recently taken steps to shut down its AI video-generation app Sora. The article says that when the author opened Sora, they saw a large amount of “strange and unsettling” AI-generated video content. The platform’s feed was overwhelmed by low-quality and distorted material, underscoring the challenges generative video faces in content moderation, distribution, and overall experience governance. Observers have also interpreted this as OpenAI beginning to recognize that “growth driven by content noise” is unlikely to form a sustainable business model.
The report also notes that OpenAI is strengthening its internal focus. Previously, Sam Altman described the company as playing multiple roles at once: a consumer product company, a hyperscale infrastructure provider, an AI research lab, and an incubator for “new things.” In a recent all-hands meeting, OpenAI’s applications head Fidji Simo emphasized the need to improve “business-side productivity.” The company plans to bring its headcount close to doubling this year and to build expert teams that help other businesses implement its technology.
