Google is introducing a new capability for Gemini aimed at a more “seamless migration” experience: support for importing chat history and memory from other AI apps. Reports say this feature is being developed alongside updates released today, including Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, with the goal of ensuring users don’t have to rebuild preferences and conversation context from scratch when switching AI assistants.
Multiple outlets previously reported that Google has been testing related approaches. The direction includes moving past conversation history and saved preferences/memory data into Gemini to maintain a continuous cross-app experience. If this type of import expands to more platforms, it could lower the friction of switching for users and may become a key differentiator in AI assistant competition—helping improve retention and ecosystem stickiness.
