Anthropic Suspends OpenClaw Creator Over Third-Party Tool Usage Controversy

Recently, AI company Anthropic temporarily banned Peter Steinberger, the creator of the open-source tool OpenClaw, from accessing its Claude platform. Steinberger posted on X that his account was suspended for "suspicious" activity, attaching a screenshot of Anthropic's notification. This incident occurred after Anthropic announced a new pricing policy, with the company stating last week that Claude subscriptions will no longer cover "third-party tools including OpenClaw", effectively imposing additional fees on users of such tools.

Steinberger noted that he had complied with the new rules and used the API, but was still banned. In his post, he suggested that Anthropic first integrated popular features into its own agent Cowork, then blocked open-source tools, possibly referring to new additions like Claude Dispatch. Anthropic offers its own agent Cowork, a move developers have called the "claw tax." While Steinberger did not specify details, this suspension highlights the tension between AI platforms and third-party developers.

Anthropic later restored Steinberger's access, but the controversy has drawn industry attention. As AI companies tighten API controls, third-party development tools face increasing restrictions.
