Apple has threatened to remove Elon Musk's AI app Grok from its App Store, following accusations that the app failed to effectively prevent users from generating nude or overly sexualized deepfake content. This potential delisting could deal a major blow to Grok, which is already under international scrutiny for content moderation issues. The situation emerged from a recently disclosed letter to U.S. senators, revealing that Apple found Grok and its social platform X in violation of App Store rules.
According to a January 30 letter cited by NBC News, after determining that Grok and X involved explicit sexual material, Apple requested both to restrict users' ability to create sexualized deepfakes and to submit a plan for improving content moderation, but the submitted plan was considered inadequate. This threat came after Democratic senators Ben Lujan, Ed Markey, and Ron Wyden urged Apple and Google to remove the X and Grok apps from their respective marketplaces, highlighting growing pressure on platforms to regulate AI-generated content.
