AI company Anthropic recently released a redesigned version of its Claude Code desktop app, with core improvements focused on parallel session management. The new version introduces a sidebar for efficient management of multiple sessions and supports drag-and-drop layout for flexible workspace arrangement, aiming to enhance developers' workflow efficiency. This update is now available to Claude Code's Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plan users, marking an important step by Anthropic in strengthening its AI programming assistant desktop experience.

Specifically, the updated app adds a persistent session sidebar with built-in filtering and grouping functions, making it easy for users to view all active and recent sessions in one place. Using the shortcut Command + ;, users can quickly launch side chat branches to derive queries from current tasks without interrupting the process. The workspace adopts a drag-and-drop pane design, integrating terminal, file editor, rebuilt diff viewer, and extended support for previewing HTML and PDF files. Additionally, the desktop client now mirrors the Claude Code CLI plugin functionality and adds SSH session support on macOS and Linux systems.

Concurrently, Anthropic also introduced the Routines feature, allowing users to set up Claude Code automation processes that run without active sessions. It is currently available in research preview to advanced users on the web version. However, many users have recently complained on GitHub and Reddit about rapid consumption of usage limits, with sessions that could last hours depleting in minutes, potentially impacting the experience. Anthropic has not publicly addressed this issue.

This redesign significantly strengthens Claude Code's capabilities in multitasking and local development tool integration, showcasing Anthropic's dedication to refining its AI programming assistant. Despite the resource consumption concerns, features like Routines hint at future possibilities for smarter, more efficient developer workflows.
