X Cracks Down on Clickbait Earnings, Rewards Original Content to Improve Feed Quality

Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has announced that it will reduce payments to users who post clickbait and recycled news content. In a post on X, platform product lead Nikita Bier warned that this move aims to prevent account holders from "flooding the timeline" with low-quality content, thereby improving the overall quality of the information feed. This marks a significant adjustment in X's content governance strategy, directly influencing creator behavior through economic means.

Specifically, Bier noted that all "aggregators"—users who quickly repackage and reshare news from other accounts—have seen their rewards reduced under the creator revenue-sharing program. Additionally, users who abuse the "BREAKING" tag in every post will face permanent payment deductions. Bier added in another post that X is testing new tools to "identify the original author of content" and "allocate a portion of revenue to them," highlighting the platform's shift toward rewarding original content. At the same time, X plans to block earnings for users who post unlabeled AI-generated war videos, further tightening rules linking content moderation with monetization.

These measures reflect the content quality challenges X faces under Musk's leadership. By cutting aggregator earnings and supporting original authors, the platform seeks to balance incentivizing creation with preventing information overload. However, precisely defining "clickbait" and "low-quality content," while avoiding harm to legitimate content sharing, will be a key test in enforcing X's policies moving forward. In the long term, this may push social media ecosystems toward greater emphasis on substantive value.
