According to reports, Apple privately threatened to remove the AI chatbot Grok from its App Store because the app generates sexualized deepfake content. Earlier this year, users discovered that Grok could easily strip clothes off individuals in photos upon request, particularly women and minors, sparking widespread controversy. Apple maintained public silence, but based on letters obtained by NBC News, the company disclosed its behind-the-scenes handling to U.S. senators.
In the letter, Apple revealed that it found X and Grok violated its App Store guidelines and privately threatened to remove Grok. After receiving complaints and noting media coverage, Apple contacted the development teams of X and Grok, requesting them to formulate plans to enhance content moderation. This move demonstrates Apple's stringent stance on platform content safety, especially concerning deepfakes and the protection of minors.
