OpenAI has announced a significant update to its Codex Desktop application, evolving it from a coding tool into a versatile productivity platform. The new version introduces key features including computer control, automated memory, and plugin support, all designed to enhance user efficiency. In a briefing, OpenAI noted that while Codex Desktop remains primarily targeted at programmers, the added tools make it suitable for broader use cases. Internal company data reveals that 80% of OpenAI employees already use Codex, underscoring that non-programmers can also benefit from the app.
The core highlight of this update is the computer use feature, enabling the AI to directly operate the user's computer for tasks such as opening applications or managing files. Additionally, the app now includes a built-in browser that supports web previews, although OpenAI has not yet demonstrated its automation capabilities. The new Codex Desktop is available for both Mac and Windows, but the computer control feature is currently limited to macOS and is not offered in the European Union, with users awaiting future expansion.
