According to tech media reports such as The Information, Microsoft is testing the integration of OpenClaw-like features into Microsoft 365 Copilot and other services. This move aims to evolve its AI assistant Copilot into a resident AI agent that can automatically perform multi-step, long-running tasks on behalf of users in the background. Microsoft vice president Omar Shahine has confirmed that the company is "exploring the potential of technologies like OpenClaw in the commercial environment."

OpenClaw is an open-source platform that has gained rapid popularity since early 2026, known for allowing users to create and run AI agents on local devices. Introducing similar capabilities to Copilot not only enhances its automation level but is also seen as a key strategy for Microsoft to win back customers attracted by competitors. Previously, Microsoft integrated Anthropic's Claude Cowork tool into Copilot to handle complex tasks.

It is reported that some new agent features inspired by OpenClaw are expected to debut at the Microsoft Build developer conference on June 2, 2026. This marks a shift for Microsoft's AI assistant from a tool that responds to commands to an active, continuously working intelligent collaborator.

This trend highlights the core direction of AI assistant development: moving from passive interaction to active agency. If Microsoft successfully and securely integrates innovations from the open-source community into enterprise-grade products, it may redefine the automation boundaries of productivity software and trigger a new round of market competition.
