OpenClaw AI Proxy Setup Guide: Installation, Configuration & Multi-Account Switching

OpenClaw

OpenClaw is a combined AI proxy and VPN tool that helps you securely switch network environments and manage multiple accounts. This article covers the complete workflow—from registration and installation to proxy connection and multi‑account switching—so you can start using it right away.

Registration & Client Download

First, visit the OpenClaw official website and click the “Register” button in the top‑right corner. Enter your email address and set a password, then verify your email to log in. We recommend using an international email service like Gmail or Outlook to avoid delivery issues. After logging in, download the client for your operating system (Windows/macOS/Android/iOS). Keep the default installation path; on first launch you’ll be asked to grant network permissions—click “Allow”.

If you’re using it with a team, you can invite members to a workspace in the settings to centrally manage proxy policies. Note that the free account has a monthly data cap, while the paid plan offers unlimited traffic and faster node speeds.

Proxy Connection & Smart Routing

Open the OpenClaw client and select “Proxy Settings” from the left menu. Several lines are available by default, including nodes in the US, Japan, and Singapore. Click the “Speed Test” button next to a node and pick the one with the lowest latency. To enable AI optimization, turn on “AI Proxy Mode” under “Smart Routing”. OpenClaw will automatically identify traffic types and assign the best node—for example, routing OpenAI traffic to a low‑latency line.

If you encounter connection failures, check whether your firewall is blocking the OpenClaw process, or try switching the port mode (e.g., from TCP to UDP). In advanced settings, you can also customize DNS and split tunneling rules for special needs. Always click “Apply” to save your changes after any modification.

Multi‑Account Switching & Security Management

OpenClaw allows you to bind multiple accounts on a single device, making it easy to separate work and personal use. In the “Account Management” screen, click “Add Account” and enter another set of email and password to bind it. To switch, simply select the target account from the dropdown menu—no need to log in again. Note that each account’s data usage is billed independently, and switching will re‑establish the proxy connection for the current session.

To prevent unauthorized access, we recommend enabling two‑factor authentication (2FA). In the security settings, bind a Google Authenticator or SMS verification. If your account gets locked, try resetting your password or contact support by submitting a ticket. Regularly clearing the client cache can also improve startup speed and connection stability.

Common Connection Errors & Fixes

Error code 1001 usually indicates a restricted network environment—try switching to a different Wi‑Fi or using mobile data. Error 2003 means your client version is outdated; download the latest version from the official website. If you keep seeing “Proxy connection timeout”, first check if any other VPN or proxy software is running locally and close conflicting programs. For corporate networks, you may need to manually open the ports used by OpenClaw (default 443 and 8080).

Remember: when you change devices or reinstall your system, you must re‑authorize the device count on the official website (free account: 2 devices, paid account: unlimited). After completing all settings, run a connection test in the “Diagnostic Tools” section to confirm everything is working normally.
