OpenClaw Error Codes: Fix Connection Timeout & Authentication Failure Fast

When OpenClaw suddenly disconnects and throws an error code, many users feel lost. As a daily proxy tool, OpenClaw frequently encounters issues like connection timeouts and authentication failures—but with the right approach, you can fix them in minutes. This article breaks down four high-frequency error codes and shares practical, tested solutions.

Connection Timeout: Check Node & Local Network

If you see "Connection timeout," first confirm whether your selected node is online. Run a latency test in the client's node list. If the node responds to ping but still times out, your local firewall or antivirus software is likely blocking the proxy port. Temporarily disable Windows Defender or 360's network protection, then try reconnecting. If the issue persists, switch to a node with lower latency and ensure your network isn't restricted by your ISP (corporate networks often block ports).

Authentication Failed: Update Subscription or Re-enter Key

"Authentication failed" usually means your subscription link has expired or the key is incorrect. Log in to the OpenClaw official website, copy the latest subscription link from your user dashboard, and reimport it into the client. Note that older client versions may not support V2Ray format—update to the latest version. Also, check your system time; a time deviation of more than 5 minutes can cause TLS handshake failure. Sync your computer's clock to resolve this.

Proxy Disconnected: Restart Service & Switch Protocol

If you get repeated "Proxy disconnected" errors or automatic reconnections, start by restarting the OpenClaw core. In the client settings, click "Restart Core." If disconnections persist and your node supports it, switch the protocol from VMess to Shadowsocks. Some ISPs perform deep packet inspection on VMess traffic, and changing protocols can effectively bypass this. Finally, check the client logs for "tls handshake timeout"—if present, the node's encryption method is being interfered with. Try a different port or IP node instead.

DNS Resolution Failed: Manually Add Backup DNS

If you can connect but websites won't load and you see "DNS resolution failed," OpenClaw's DNS forwarding is likely broken. In the client settings, change the DNS to 223.5.5.5 (Alibaba Public DNS) or 8.8.8.8, and enable "Bypass LAN and Target IP." If the problem continues, disable the client's "DNS hijacking" feature, revert to your system's default DNS, and pair it with your browser's secure DNS (e.g., Cloudflare) to restore normal access.
