The Complete Guide to Fixing Common ChatGPT Errors: Network, CAPTCHA, and Account Issues

ChatGPT

If ChatGPT suddenly throws an error, don’t rush to smash your keyboard. This article rounds up the most frequent problem scenarios—ranging from network drops to invalid CAPTCHAs and flagged accounts—each paired with hands-on fixes I’ve personally tried, so you can resume your conversation within minutes.

Network Timeout & Request Failure

When you see “Network Error” or “Connection timed out,” the issue is usually with your local network or proxy settings. First, check if your Wi‑Fi is working—try switching to a mobile hotspot. If you’re using a proxy or VPN, turn it off or switch to a different node, because ChatGPT restricts certain proxy endpoints. Clearing your browser cache and cookies can also resolve many temporary connection hiccups.

CAPTCHA Won’t Load or Shows as Invalid

If the CAPTCHA image doesn’t display during login, or you keep getting “Invalid CAPTCHA” after entering it, browser extensions (especially ad blockers like uBlock Origin) are often the culprit. Temporarily disable all extensions. If that doesn’t work, try Chrome’s Incognito mode or switch to another browser (Edge, Firefox, etc.). CAPTCHA is sensitive to IP request frequency—avoid refreshing rapidly; wait a minute or two before trying again.

Account Login Failure & Restricted Access

Getting kicked out with “Your account has been flagged” or being unable to send messages after logging in often means OpenAI’s risk controls have been triggered. First, check your email for any official warning messages from OpenAI and follow the steps to unlock your account if one exists. In many cases, it’s caused by logging in from too many different IPs in a short time, or using the same account from multiple locations simultaneously. Log out, wait 30 minutes, then log back in from the same network. If you’re still on the free tier, upgrading to Plus may reduce the chance of being restricted—though this is based on experience, not a guarantee.

Too Many Requests (429 Error)

Seeing “429 Too Many Requests” after a flurry of conversations means you’ve exceeded the free tier’s rate limit. The fix is simple: take a break, grab a glass of water, and wait 5–10 minutes before continuing. If you’re in a hurry, clear old conversations to free up cache, or switch to the mobile app (which typically has more lenient rate limits). Over the long run, reducing the number of concurrent chat windows will help you avoid this error.
