The open-source AI agent platform OpenClaw (now backed by OpenAI) has unexpectedly thrust Apple's Mac lineup into the spotlight of AI hardware demand. According to Decrypt, the Mac mini, a desktop computer previously priced at $599 and largely overlooked, has now become one of the most sought-after AI hardware devices worldwide. Apple CEO Tim Cook warned that AI-driven demand has far exceeded expectations, and supply shortages for both the Mac mini and Mac Studio could last "for months."
OpenClaw fully leverages the unique advantages of Apple's unified memory architecture. The M4 Ultra chip supports up to 192GB of unified memory, allowing developers to run large local AI models that even a single NVIDIA consumer-grade GPU (with a maximum of only 32GB VRAM) cannot accommodate. This has made the Mac series the default hardware choice for running local large language models, sparking a surge in purchasing interest from developers and research institutions.
