The open-source AI agent platform OpenClaw—now backed by OpenAI—is thrusting Apple’s Mac lineup into the spotlight of AI hardware demand. According to Decrypt, Apple CEO Tim Cook has warned that the Mac mini and Mac Studio could face months-long supply shortages as AI-driven demand far exceeds expectations. The Mac mini, originally priced at $599 and receiving modest attention, has now become one of the most sought-after devices worldwide for running AI workloads locally.
What gives Apple a renewed edge in the AI market through OpenClaw is its full utilization of Apple’s unified memory architecture. The latest M4 Ultra chip supports up to 192GB of unified memory, enabling developers to run large models that no single consumer-grade NVIDIA GPU (with a maximum VRAM of only 32GB) can handle. Data shows that wait times for upgraded Mac mini units with 64GB of memory have stretched to 16–18 weeks, while the Mac Studio with 512GB of unified memory has effectively vanished from regular stock listings.
