OpenAI today launched the Codex for Chrome extension, enabling its AI coding assistant to run directly inside the Chrome browser. Compatible with Mac and PC, the extension allows Codex to access the browser environment seamlessly—testing web applications, gathering context across multiple tabs, using Web Developer Tools, and more—without taking over the user’s browser control. This update significantly boosts Codex’s usability and response speed in browser scenarios.

According to OpenAI, after introducing the “Computer Use” feature in the desktop version of Codex, they observed that most common workflows take place inside the browser. The new extension is designed to fill the gap for browser-side automation tasks that traditional plugins or APIs cannot handle, helping Codex assist users more efficiently with daily browser-based work. At the same time, the extension retains its developer-oriented programming assistance capabilities, marking a key step in OpenAI’s push to integrate Codex into everyday workflows.

In addition, OpenAI has also introduced a new ChatGPT subscription tier at $100 per month, tailored for more intensive Codex usage. This plan is aimed at professional users who need frequent Codex access for complex programming and automation tasks, further expanding OpenAI’s reach in the AI coding assistant market.

Insight: From a desktop app to a browser extension, Codex is extending its reach into the environments users spend the most time in. This “embedded” AI assistant model has the potential to significantly lower the barrier, enabling non-developers to automate repetitive browser tasks using natural language commands. It will be worth watching how OpenAI balances compliance and privacy protection moving forward.
