AI startup Anthropic has recently announced a partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, leasing computing power from the Colossus One data center in Memphis to support the rapidly growing demand for its AI coding service, Claude Code. According to the agreement, the facility will provide Anthropic with over 300 megawatts of compute capacity within the month, encompassing more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs. Colossus One is one of the largest data centers globally, equipped with hundreds of thousands of advanced Nvidia chips, purpose-built for high-intensity AI workloads.

Anthropic is best known for its flagship product Claude, which emphasizes AI ethics and safety. The partnership with SpaceX has drawn industry attention, as Elon Musk has repeatedly criticized what he calls "over-woke" issues in the AI space, while Anthropic has consistently championed "responsible AI." Analysts note that computing power shortages are a common bottleneck for AI companies today. By teaming up with SpaceX while continuing collaborations with hyperscale cloud providers like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, Anthropic reflects a pragmatic approach to securing compute resources.

With the surge in Claude Code users, Anthropic urgently needs additional computing capacity to maintain service stability. This partnership not only eases its short-term compute pressure but also highlights the cross-industry synergy between AI and aerospace giants. Going forward, such "unconventional collaborations" may become a new normal for tech companies tackling compute bottlenecks.
