What Is the Spotify Family Plan & Who Is It For?
The Spotify Family Plan is one of the most cost-effective Premium options. It allows up to 6 family members to share one subscription while keeping individual accounts and personalized recommendations. Compared to the individual plan, the family plan costs less per month and still offers all core benefits: ad-free listening, offline downloads, and high-quality audio. It's ideal for roommates, partners, or relatives living under the same roof. However, all members must enter the same residential address to pass verification.
How to Set Up a Spotify Family Plan
First, you need to already be a Spotify Premium individual subscriber (or subscribe directly to the Family plan). On the Spotify website or app, find the "Upgrade to Premium Family" option, then click it. The system will prompt you to create or join a family group. The creator (family plan admin) must confirm their residential address, then send invitations via email or a link to up to 5 other members. When invited members click the link, they also need to enter the same address as the admin to join successfully. The whole process usually takes just a few minutes. Use your primary home address — don't attempt to enter a fake address, as that may trigger a policy violation.
Member Management & Account Switching Tips
As the admin, you can add or remove members anytime from the "Account" page under "Manage Family Members." Each member must be at least 13 years old and can only switch family groups once per month. If a member moves to a new address, they need to update their address or leave the current family group. In daily use, each member logs in with their own Spotify account — no interference with others. Switching accounts is simple: go to "Settings" in the app, log out of the current account, then log in with your personal account. Music libraries, playlists, and weekly recommendations are all preserved separately.
Common Setup Failure & Troubleshooting
Many users report seeing "address mismatch" or "location verification failed" when trying to join a family plan. This usually happens because the member is not on the same network as the admin, or the system detects that the IP address doesn't match the submitted address. Solutions: Ensure all members are connected to the same Wi-Fi (or same IP) during the initial setup, and turn off any VPN. Also, when the admin confirms the address, use an exact street address with house number — don't use a PO Box. If the issue persists, try clearing your browser cache or switching to a different device. In most cases, these steps resolve the problem.
