OpenAI has officially launched the Codex for Chrome extension, allowing the AI coding assistant Codex to run directly within the Chrome browser on both Mac and PC. The extension enables Codex to test web applications, retrieve context across multiple tabs, and use developer tools – all without taking control of the user’s browser. OpenAI noted that after introducing the "Computer Use" feature in the desktop version of Codex, they found most common workflows happen inside the browser. As a result, this new Chrome extension offers a faster and more convenient way to handle browser-side tasks that plugins or APIs cannot address.
This extension is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to make Codex more useful for everyday work. Alongside this release, OpenAI also introduced a new $100-per-month ChatGPT subscription tier aimed at users who need heavier Codex usage. The subscription plan was announced on April 9, 2026, and is designed to provide stronger computing power and feature support for high-frequency developers. Codex for Chrome is now available for download on the Chrome Web Store, supporting both Windows and macOS.
