OpenAI Launches Codex Chrome Extension for In-Browser AI Coding Assistance

OpenAI today announced the launch of Codex for Chrome, a new Chrome extension that allows the AI coding assistant Codex to run directly within the browser on both Mac and PC. Unlike the previous approach that required taking over the entire desktop, this extension enables Codex to perform web application testing, multi‑tab context retrieval, and use of Web DevTools without interrupting normal browser control.

OpenAI noted that after introducing the “Computer Use” feature in the desktop version of Codex, they observed that the vast majority of workflows occur within the browser. This Chrome extension is designed to help Codex handle browser‑side tasks that plugins or APIs can’t easily accomplish, faster and more conveniently. It’s part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to make Codex not just a developer tool, but also a helper for everyday tasks that frequently involve browser operations.

Alongside the extension, OpenAI introduced a new $100‑per‑month ChatGPT subscription tier aimed at users who need heavier Codex usage. This move further lowers the barrier for frequent AI‑driven coding and automation. With deeper browser integration, Codex is evolving from a pure development tool into a general‑purpose work assistant—potentially unlocking greater value in areas like web automation testing and cross‑platform data extraction.
