The Paris public prosecutor's office announced Wednesday that it has formally opened a criminal investigation into Elon Musk and his social media platform X, alleging involvement with child sexual abuse images, deepfakes, misinformation, and claims that the platform's AI system Grok was involved in a conspiracy to deny crimes against humanity. Prosecutors are seeking multiple charges against Musk and X, including conspiracy to possess and distribute child sexual abuse material, illegal collection of personal data, and manipulation of automated data processing systems.
The investigation began in January 2025 and is being led by the cybercrime unit of the Paris prosecutor’s office. In February of this year, investigators raided X’s offices in France, and Musk was later summoned. In March, prosecutors also alerted the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, stating that the controversy surrounding sexually explicit deepfake content generated by Grok “may have been deliberately orchestrated to artificially inflate the valuations of X and xAI, thus constituting a criminal offense.”
