The open-source AI agent space has a new leader. According to OpenRouter's latest global daily app and agent rankings, as of May 10, 2026, Hermes Agent developed by Nous Research has officially surpassed OpenClaw to claim the top spot. This change signals a turning point in the AI agent race—from "feature stacking" toward "self-evolution."

Previously dominating the rankings, OpenClaw underwent major changes recently: its founder, Peter Steinberger, joined OpenAI in February 2026, after which OpenClaw was transferred to an independent open-source foundation with OpenAI as a sponsor. Its latest v0.13.0 "Tenacity" release, launched on May 7, 2026, includes a full-stack React/Ink TUI rewrite, native AWS Bedrock support, and GPT-5.5 access via Codex OAuth, alongside 1,556 commits and 761 merged PRs. However, Hermes Agent quickly rose to prominence thanks to a simpler positioning: easier deployment, persistent memory (powered by SQLite), and a core self-learning system—allowing the agent to continuously improve its performance based on tasks it has executed.

According to multiple comparative analyses, Hermes Agent's key advantages lie in self-improvement (task-driven learning), security (zero agent CVEs recorded), and cost efficiency (serverless hosting at just $5 per month). Launched on February 25, 2026, the agent overtook an established project in just over two months. Going forward, as more developers and enterprises deploy AI agents in production, lightweight tools with continuous evolution capabilities may reshape the competitive landscape of open-source AI agents. OpenClaw's deep ecosystem and OpenAI backing cannot be underestimated, but Hermes Agent's rise has already proven one thing: in the AI agent space, "learners" have greater long-term potential than "feature-packed" alternatives.
